01 Project Onboarding

In May 2022, I was onboarded onto the Simplii Mortgage Application project as a replacement for the designer on the project, who had been assigned to help with a new project.

I worked as the sole designer for the project, and could reach out to other designers if I had any questions or for feedback.

I began my work on the project by familiarizing myself with the original draft user flow designs and the cross-functional project team through one-on-one introductions. In these introductions, I asked the team about any expectations they had of me as a designer and any way I could best support them in my role.

The project's goal was to transition from a heavily Mortgage-consultant based application to a more digitally-focused application where client information and documents could be easily requested to help streamline the process for clients and mortgage consultants.

02 Design Iterations

After familiarizing myself with the project, I started to make revisions based on business requirements.

Some revisions made to the original design included:

  1. Building high-fidelity mockups for additional user flows, including a full application flow for co-borrowers

  2. Redesigned an existing “continue application” pop-up modal

    1. Primary button was changed to start new application, secondary became view applications.

    2. To view existing applications, where the modal originally listed them all as radio buttons, we switched it so that it leads them to their “status page” where they can view all their applications and details.

  3. Created a “next steps” page to ensure all required and helpful information is provided to users before they are handed off to a third-party platform.

03 Simplii Rebranding

As a part of Simplii’s 2023 rebrand, I converted the Mortgage Application project's designs to the new branding, making use of the new design system being implemented.

In order to build out the flows with the new branding, I utilized auto-layout and our component library to re-skin the designs.

Focused on accessibility, I worked with the rebranding team to ensure all components used in Direct to Consumer would meet contrast requirements and usable minimum sizes for text and buttons.

04 Further Iterations

After rebranding the design, we made further changes to improve the quality of the experience. Some changes made during this time included:

  1. On the mobile app, designed multiple options for an “already applied?” container based on branding guidelines to replace an easily-missed link previously included at the bottom of the product pages.

  2. Changing the layout of the post sign-on product list to reduce clutter. I decreased the number of products per row to two, taking advantage of increased white space the lower number provided.

  3. Added a dynamic error message when users click an eligibility option for which they become ineligible for the product.

    • This was done to increase clarity and understanding of why they aren’t eligible before they continue the process and enter in information.

    • Includes copy to explain why this is the case.

05 Development Support

As the project continued, I supported the project through development. Working with Product Owners, Business Analysts, Copywriters, and Developers, I made needed updates, ensured consistency between the Mortgage Application project and other projects at Simplii, and ensured clarity on expectations between the design team and project team.

06 Conclusion and Next Steps

Simplii's Mortgage Application project was launched in September 2023.
